ABOUT TJ
TJ Watt is a Co-founder of the Ancient Forest Alliance (AFA), a National Geographic Society Explorer, and award-winning conservation photographer who has been working to document BC’s endangered old-growth forests for 15 years. His contributions to the conservation movement have helped put old-growth logging under the international spotlight.
TJ is notably credited with identifying and playing a lead role in protecting the now-famed Avatar Grove on Vancouver Island and creating critical momentum to protect old-growth forests across BC. His efforts have helped establish big tree tourism in the surrounding town of Port Renfrew, allowing it to gain a reputation as Canada’s “Tall Tree Capital”, which has created new sustainable economic opportunities. TJ’s work has also helped direct necessary research into the economic benefits and costs of protected areas.
